Wooden Necklaces

Hi guys!

My husband is a woodturner (check out our website) and often has off-cuts and leftover bits of wood lying around. I thought I'd put some of it to good use and make some necklace pendants. He had a cylindrical bud vase that he'd taken a dislike to and just thrown into his off-cuts bin, so I asked him to slice it into sections for me on the bandsaw.

Rough-sawn sections of wood
Once I had the rough-cut "polo" shapes, I then set about sanding them using various grades of sandpaper. Starting with the largest grade of 80, I subsequently worked through the grades until I finished with 400 (which is basically very fine). This ensured that the pieces were sanded sufficiently, but I didn't want them too glossy, so I didn't go mad with the sanding.

Sanding the sections

Once the pieces were sanded down, it was evident that two of them had some lovely natural grain, and so I decided to keep those as they are and simply provide them with a coat of cellulose sanding sealer. This seals the wood and provides a matt sheen, but nothing too glossy.

The sections with the lovely natural grain were left as is and coated with the sealer. I decided to pyrograph the plain sections. I'll show you more about pyrography in my next post - needless to say, it takes a little getting used to, but you can achieve some lovely effects.

I then added leather thongs to each necklace and fastened them using two slip knots, enabling them to be adjusted to any length.
