Mosaic Coaster Kits - Hobbycraft Kit

Hi guys!

Today we decided to crack open our treasure chest of Hobbycraft kits and try our hand at Mosaic coaster making.

We picked a heart design and a ladybird one.

Each pack contains a board, mosaic tiles, grout powder and a double-sided sticky sheet.

The instructions tell you to follow the coloured picture on the front, so you place the tiles in the correct order, however, you can really do whatever you like.

First of all, we stuck the sticky sheet onto the board (as per the instructions) and peeled off the top layer to leave just the adhesive behind.

Then, we started sticking the mosaic tiles onto it.

Some of the tiles needed cutting and the pack does tell you this, but the tiles cannot be cut with scissors - like the instructions say. In the end, we had to use a chopping board and a sharp knife in order to cut them effectively.

It's very therapeutic and we enjoyed it, however, although the instructions don't mention using tweezers, we found that tweezers were the only way to effectively pick up the tiles and stick them in the correct place!

So, if you have tweezers somewhere in your house - definitely use them for this!

Once we decided to use the tweezers, it was smooth sailing.

The tiles were hard to cut but luckily the heart tile didn't need any cutting, it was just the ladybird that required quite a lot of tile altering!

I followed the picture to create the ladybird itself, but I did my own thing for the background.

Once you've stuck down all the tiles and you're happy with your design, it's time to apply the grout.

Each kit comes with its own packet of grout powder and all you need to do is mix it with a little bit of water. We put way too much water in our first lot, which rendered it useless! We recommend that you take it very slowly when adding the water to make sure it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency that is slightly thinner than toothpaste.

This is the scary part. You now need to spread the grout over the entire piece. Protective gloves are recommended so you can use your finger to push it into all the gaps on the tiles. Don't forget to grout the edges too!

After around 45 minutes to an hour, the grout will be dry (we left ours for about an hour). Now, using a damp cloth and circular motions you rub all the grout away (shown in the video below) to reveal your beautiful, completed design.

Overall, these kits were very enjoyable and not too hard once we'd figured out how to cut the tiles and that using the tweezers made it a lot easier.
