Hi guys!
We thought we'd share with your our experiences at the Hobbycraft Advent Calendar Tree Workshop at our local Hobbycraft store in Peterborough last weekend.
Needless to say, we had a great time and met some nice ladies who had also signed up for the workshop. They'd been to a previous one where they'd made an advent train calendar, and were evidently so happy with the result that they thought they'd try their hand at making an advent tree calendar.
As you know from our previous posts, we have attended a number of workshops at the Peterborough Hobbycraft before, and we had a lovely time at this one too.
The 2-hour workshop started off with us being asked to choose 4 colours of acrylic paint that we would like to use on our calendars. Zakiya chose a lovely matt grey, a light pink, a gorgeous teal and a blue. I have to say, I do prefer the colour palette that Zakiya chose, but there you go ...
I went for light pink, lilac, a deep purple and a grey, and we also had a bottle of silver glitter acrylic to use between us.
We were then provided with the calendars themselves (which were much bigger than I thought they would be), a pack of paintbrushes, a little palette to mix the paints in, jugs of water and plenty of paper towel to wipe both our brushes and our hands on.
We soon became thoroughly absorbed by the process of painting the calendars. We all started off by painting the larger surfaces first. It became quickly clear that the lighter colours were going to require at least 3 coats, but we had plenty of paint for that.
The grey that Zakiya chose went on really nicely. My pink was a little patchy until around coat 3, but that's the nature of pigment 😀.
The 2 hours were up before we knew it! So we had to finish off where we'd got to and assemble all our goodies to take with us in order to complete the project at home. We took with us our paints, brushes, palettes, calendars and also a little pack of calendar numbers.
Once home, Zakiya and I set up our projects on the kitchen table which has been very much a "doing" table since Zakiya was tiny! It has stains and patches, score marks and blemishes all over it, but it has doubled up as our trusty crafting & dinner table for many years.
We then carried on with the paint job.
Painting the little drawer fronts was very satisfying, especially using the flat brushes that we were provided with. I chose to add silver glitter to the fronts of all my drawers, while Zakiya went for a "less is more" ethos, to great effect. However, she did add glitter to the fronts of all her numbers ...
Working out our colour schemes and arrangements for the placement of the drawers was a little tricky, but Zakiya and I each chose a slightly different placing of our numbers and pattern of colours.
Zakiya raided her craft stash and came up with the great idea of using small sections of double-sided foam tape to slightly raise the letters from the drawers, instead of just sticking them on. Again, to great effect!
Zakiya chose to place her glittery numbers in the bottom left-hand corner of each drawer, while I opted for a bottom right-hand corner positioning of mine.
We are really pleased with the results! Zakiya and I have both decided to give these advent calendars to our respective partners. We do now have to think about filling them though!

Wow ... the calendars look quite big. Guess you can buy these from Hobbycraft and then paint them at home yourself? Love the idea.
